Combining security and PC maintenance

Symantec has begun to market NortonLive’s PC Tune-up. You can get a feel for it via a free PC health check available here.  A subscription is required for  ongoing coverage. The concept makes good sense. You change your car oil and do routine maintenance on your car — why not your PC? says Symantec VP Lenny Alugas.

In addition to optimizing memory and performance, this service also does a security sweep.  “Like our car,  if we expect our computers to perform, we need to maintain them,” asserts Alugas. ” NortonLive experts remotely run a complete scan to evaluate what’s affecting your PC, we fine tune key areas to improve performance and we assess and ensure comprehensive protection and security – basically we get your PC running like new.”

It will be interesting to see how consumers respond. Anyone out there  have an opinion about the efficacy of hybrid services like this?

  1. Done right, it’s a heckofa strategy to avoid the Microsoft Morro bullet. I have contact with a significant number of reasonably proficient computer users, and most of them either do not pay much attention to or do not understand keeping their computers tuned up and secure.

Three factors are required for success: Gaining their attention, doing the job right and setting the right price.

  2. Norton PC Tune Up was easy to use and the customer service agent was informative, polite and explained all he did with my computer. Had a laptop that was running quite slow. PC Tune up has you allow them entry into your computer, goes through your files, deletes files, sets up maintenance and checks for areas where hackers can break in. The process was simple and informative (I’m a computer idiot) and now my computer runs much faster.
