These DIY malware kits in combination with botnet services for rent hint at an emerging service based business model where the only barrier to entry is making contact with these underground criminal circles.

“It’s possible that the people creating and selling these kits may be the same groups already profiting from cybercrime, and they could see this as yet another revenue stream,” says Rossi.

Thanks for getting the word out that botnets kits are so readily available. Education is truly the key in blocking these kinds of attacks. I am so glad that you wrote about this so people know what to look for and what to avoid. I work for a network protection company, TechGuard Security, and follow these types of attacks that are now happening on a daily basis especially in the finance industry. Having security technology in place where organizations have the ability to granularly block the traffic that they deem malicious is completely necessary to fight against these threats.

It's also interesting to note that the urls in this recent outbreak were hosted on fast flux networks. These DIY malware kits in combination with botnet services for rent hint at an emerging service based business model where the only barrier to entry is making contact with these underground criminal circles.

With such sophisticated tools available to any would-be scammer (and for a trivial fee) it looks like we could be in for an interesting ride in 2010.
